Confessions of a Chronic Nail Biter

For as long as I can remember, I have always been a nail biter. Until I came across an article entitled  “5 Little-Known Dangers of Nail Biting,” I never realized there was a name for my problem. Turns out I was an onychopagiac! Who would have imagined?

In the article by Dr. Joseph Mercola, he states that onychopagia is a relatively common habit that affects people of all ages. Who knew I would be in such good company? NOT!

When I was a small child, my mother tried EVERYTHING from Thum (which was created to stop thumb sucking and nail biters)  to  bribing me with things like bicycles, my own pair of roller skates, clothes, rings (as I got older), food (mostly sweets and candy!), trips, you name it!! Just to keep me from biting my nails down to the quick!

NOTHING worked! Well, I say “nothing”…….UNTIL I had a set of acrylic nails put on around December 2009. I was going to a formal Christmas party, had a beautiful hot pink gown with sparkles and decided I’d had enough of my ragged nails – which made my hands look old. So, off to the nearest nail salon I go for a mani/pedi. It took all of a few HOURS to replace the image I’d lived with for years. I had these GORGEOUS nails – AND, the miracle was-  I noticed I didn’t bite my nails anymore!

Fast forward –

Two years ago I started using a 30 Day Cleanse & Fat Burning system that included taking a daily dose of Ionix Supreme, a nutrient-rich herbal tonic infused with natural vitamins, minerals and plant-based Adaptogens– perfect for combating the effects of stress and fatigue. Some time I’d take it as T+ Chai Tea– with warm water first thing in the morning, or as an E+ energy shot before a workout . At other times, I’d drink it over ice – depending on my mood and the weather. What I didn’t realize was that I was drinking “pure gold” as far as my health was concerned. Made up of ingredients sourced from all around the world, I started to get familiar with words like rhodiola, and shilajit; ashwagandha and schizandra. All foreign to me until then!

Speaking of the “world,” WHAT in the world does all this have to do with my childhood problem of chronic nail-biting? I’m getting to that part! 🙂

When I took Ionix Supreme, I seemed to be more calm. That was to be expected since I’d been told it was used to address stress, which happens to be a major cause of weight gain. Stress comes in MANY different forms. At the time mine was financial, loss of a business, weight gain, caring for elderly parents, and several other major life changes going on at once. During this time, I kept my acrylic nails. Maintaining them every two weeks to keep them from breaking off was not only an added expense, but I noticed my nails underneath were paper thin!

Last December, before heading out to Las Vegas on a month long business trip, I made the decision that the acrylic nails were coming off for good! Realizing that I’d be working long hours at the Convention Center, for several weeks straight, factored in to my decision. Knowing that it would be near impossible to have a nail “emergency” (you girls KNOW what I’m talking about!)  fixed was another thing that made it easier to give up the glam! I knew I’d be dealing with even worse nails than I’d started with, but, I took the plunge. I felt FREE!!! No longer a slave to spending hours in the nail salon being “pampered,” I loved knowing that my nails could breathe.

For the first few weeks, I’d baby my real nails with oils- almond, olive, or a really good moisturizer. Then I decided to make a trip to Sally’s Beauty Supply or Ulta  for something called Nail Tek Intensive Therapy.

That’s what I use between having professional manicures done at my local nail salon. And of course I am continuing on my nutritional system which helped tremendously! My nails were getting stronger every day – being repaired from the inside out with good things like Ionix Supreme and the best undenatured whey protein available!

What would YOU do with healthier nails? Can you relate to my struggle?
